York was the first Community Furniture store to open back in 1988 and over the years  in various guises, it’s helped tens of thousands of people in the City of York and surrounding areas to improve their homes through affordable reused furniture, electrical appliances and Paint. The York store is the largest of the three Community Furniture Stores, with over 5,000 square foot of warehouse space and stock that changes on a daily basis.

Over the last three decades York CFS has worked hard to build a relationship with the community and has become the go-to reuse store in York for buying and donating home furnishings. We work closely with City of York Council to deliver the City’s Financial Assistance Scheme, ensuring that those most in need are able to create a comfortable new home when they’re housed by the local authority.

As well as the regularly changing donated furniture, we stock a full range of new household white goods and bedroom furniture available for all customers to buy. We are also part of the Community RePaint Network, putting reuseable paint that would otherwise go to waste back into use at a fixed price per litre whatever the type or brand.

In 2019 the store began working with Blueberry Academy to provide a workshop space which has quickly become a resource, not only for the store to repair and up-cycle donated furniture, but a space where local individuals can come to learn new skills and gain experience.  Although this is a new venture for the store there are already plans to grow this to match the workshops in Selby and Scarborough, which will boost voluntary opportunities in York for those facing long term unemployment and barriers to work.

The store is kindly supported by the City of York Council for its work reducing landfill waste and supporting new tenants to setup home. We are also grateful for the support of The National Lottery Community Fund and the Charities Aid Foundation to keep us working through the lockdown and reopening period.
