The Community Furniture Store in Selby are delighted to have received a grant of £1,124.70 from Selby Town Council. The money will be used to help cover the costs so that a local person with long-term health difficulties can attend workshops at the Selby store. Store manager, Cookie, said: “We’re very grateful to the town council for this generous grant that will contribute to the costs of the workshops”.
The workshops give people who are long-term unemployed valuable work experience to get them back into the workplace. In addition to helping the unemployed, workshops also benefit people with long-term health conditions, including learning difficulties and autism. Participants typically spend one or two days a week carrying out a range of practical activities under the supervision of staff, according to their individual abilities. The aim of these placements is to provide both practical and social skills. They can help to improve their confidence and self-esteem, as well as offering respite to careers, where necessary. Workshop projects include building garden furniture like picnic tables and planters, as well as refurbishing items of furniture. This contributes to our overall goals of reducing waste whilst supporting people in our local community.
